Hey guys!
In today’s post, I would like to share what I think about eating seafood, fishing, and farmed fish. All opinions are my own, and hence subjective. I am not forcing my views, and just voicing them out.
Fish is widely consumed worldwide, fishing is promoted as a hobby, and you can find fish markets in every place! But have we taken enough time, to think, and contemplate what’s on our plate? Many people disregard fish as social animals, but it’s not true! They live in shoals, communicate and have their own social circles. They have a will to thrive, and not to be pierced by a fork.
And…fishing is never sustainable! What you get in the markets, is only a part of the haul! A huge proportion of marine life gets ruined through fishing. Fishing nets capture them all! Be it endangered fish or those present in abundance.
When we fish, we are literally killing our Earth. Fishing boats and fishing equipment are discarded out in the deep. It forms layers and layers of debris, ultimately choking aquatic plants and animals to death. Creating more and more dead zones, indirectly increasing global warming. Even whales swallow plastic and face an excruciating end.
And now comes farmed fishing!
Is it any better, no! What do you suppose fish eat? Other fish… yes! So you feed farmed fish by fishing (somewhat alliterative and a tongue twister!). The cycle repeats, and customers are fooled that they are moving towards sustainable development. And does farmed fish mean they don’t feel pain? They are traumatised when a hook just kills them and pierces their mouth.
But it is not that simple. What about the people whose daily livelihood is based on fishing? We can’t just stop fishing one fine day but have to progress towards that goal. Finding new sources of employment, and increasing education tangibility. We need to let business tycoons know that we care! If we boycott eating animals in our homes, educate our families, our communities, then we will make a change. Companies will be indirectly forced to explore more vegan options.
I think it’s high time, that we don’t just get entertained by movies such as “Finding Nemo”, but find a message in it. A cry for help.

Great post, Arnav! I know this isn’t the angle you explored in your post, but I’m also highly concerned about the amount of plastic littering our seas and oceans and the danger it presents to marine life.

Thank you so much!🐠 Plastic litter is indeed devastating for marine life forms. I did try to include that perspective, though. Thanks for your time, I really appreciate it!🐬🐠

As someone who does eat fish a lot…sometimes we do lose perspective of whats right and what’s wrong…of course the ideal scenario would be if fish remained in the water but at the same time, thousands depend on it for their livelihood….such reminders make one think and weigh in the pros and cons 🤔🤔

I am so glad that you do consider your choices🐠😀 Yes thousand depends on fishing, but we must try to find alternatives, together! Thanks for reading!

I having been having an aquarium for a few years. I even have 4 Nemo fish currently 😀 they are amazing and I am doing whatever I can to give them best life possible.
I check the water every day to make sure it has all the correct levels. If it doesn’t, you can easily tell that the fish are stressed.
Luckily in an aquarium this is easy to fix, but the ocean is a whole different story.
All the trash in the water needs to stop! I really feel so sad for the fish and corals! Great Post!

I completely agree, overfishing is a large problem. But we really need them for our oceans and for the environment. I’m doing my best to turn vegan and I’m almost there, I think it’s important that we all eat things that affect our planet the least. Thanks for sharing 😊

Excellent insights! I’m not vegan yet. But I hope to be one day. I had to visit a factory farm for my job (dairy cows). It was immensely disturbing to see how unnaturally they’re forced to live. Humans can be so inhumane! Thank you for your writing 🌺

Good Post.
If people can’t give pleasure to others than they have no right to ruined others life.
Need to focus that our life connected with nature, So it is our responsibility to protect it upto possible limits.

I thought I was the only one that felt sorry for fish. The world is in a sad state on the way we are draining the world’s resources, but the good news is that people are becoming aware and taking action doing sustainable things on their own. Hopefully governments will catch on before it’s too late. But maybe the people doing it on their own will be enough to restore and heal the earth.

You must be really kind to feel compassionate towards these beautiful creatures! Fish love their families and communities just as much as we do. But humans don’t know better than killing them, and ultimately destroying their own life source. It’s like a slow suicide. 🐠
